Walk any lit street at night and your shadow behaves like a slow clock hand. Approaching a lamp, it falls behind you and shortens. Passing beneath, it vanishes for a step, then reappears in front of you, growing long. Every lamp is a small threshold with the same sequence, and the city spaces them without any help from you.
I have been using this for a short banishing on the walk home, one gesture per lamp, and the spacing does what a bead string never did for me. It is not mine to fiddle with, and it makes me slow down at the dark stretches rather than hurry through them. In my experience a rite counted by something outside the body holds its pace better than one counted by breath, which drifts with mood.
I cannot say whether the shadow crossing means anything. I would like to hear from anyone who has run a counted walk for more than a month and found breath counting the better of the two.
